AUDI A8 2007 MODEL LINEUP

The 2007 Audi A8 is available in four variations: the A8 4.2; A8 L 4.2; A8 L W12; and the S8 5.2. All come with Audi quattro all-wheel drive.

The standard A8 features a 4.2-liter V8 and six-speed automatic transmission that deliver instant throttle response, while quattro all-wheel drive and an adaptive air suspension provide an excellent balance between handling and ride quality.

The A8 L rides on a stretched wheelbase that provides more room and comfort for rear-seat passengers.

Both V8 models get a 20-hp boost to 350 horsepower, while improving fuel economy by one mile per gallon to an EPA-rated 18/25 mpg City/Highway.

The A8 L W12 features a 12-cylinder engine and a 450 horsepower.

The Audi S8 is powered by a 5.2-liter V10 and comes with a firmer suspension, faster steering, and bigger brakes.

The A8 4.2 rides on a 115.9-inch wheelbase, while the A8 L adds 5.1 inches in both wheelbase and overall length. They are powered by a 4.2-liter V8 rated at 350 horsepower and come with a six-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic manual shift control. The parking brake is operated by a switch.

The A8 L W12 rides on the 121-inch wheelbase. It comes with ultra-luxury amenities such as power sunshades for the rear windows; heated power-adjustable rear seats; and leather upholstery on the door panels, console and dashboard.

Options for the A8 and A8L include adaptive cruise control, which uses radar to maintain a required distance from traffic ahead; four-spoke multifunction steering wheel; a solar-powered sunroof panel that blows cooling air through the car while it is parked; front seat massage and ventilation; rear-seat electric lumbar adjustment; dual rear-seat climate control; 19-inch wheels with all-season tires and so on.

VOLKSWAGEN GOLF

Volkswagen Golf comes in two-door and four-door versions. All are hatchbacks. Three trim levels are available, GL, GLS, and GTI. Volkswagen offers four engines for the Golf which is more than other manufacturers do for their compacts.

GL two-door is extremely well equipped for a small car, with standard air conditioning, cruise control, power windows and power heated mirrors. Golf GL comes standard with the 115-horsepower engine and 5-speed manual transmission.

GLS is only available as a four-door and comes with a power sunroof and 15-inch alloy wheels.

Options on GL and the GLS include the Electronic Stabilization Program, a system that uses sophisticated sensors and microprocessors to stabilize the vehicle in a sudden emergency maneuver and the Cold Weather Package with heated front seats and heated windshield washer nozzles.

GTI is the hot-rod of the line and comes with the 1.8 T engine or the 200-hp VR6 engine. Available as an option only on the VR6 is the Technology Package, which includes electronic climate control, a self-dimming rearview mirror, and rain-sensing automatic windshield wipers.

No matter which engine you choose, the Golf offers excellent handling and a comfortable, well-controlled ride quality. With adequate coil springs and gas-filled shocks, the driver feels connected to the road while vibrations and bumps are comfortably muffled. MacPherson struts in front and the independent torsion-beam suspension in the rear help keep the car rooted to the road. Aggressive maneuvers generate little body roll. The longer wheelbase and the much stiffer chassis of this fourth-generation Golf reduce vibration on rough roads and improve handling in tight corners.

The Golf’s firm brake pedal provides good feedback to the driver. This car is stable under hard braking. ABS is ready to prevent wheel lockup, allowing the driver to maintain steering control in an emergency stop.

Volkswagen’s Anti-Slip Regulation, or ASR, detects wheel slipping and applies braking force to that particular wheel. Working with the Electronic Differential Lock at speeds below 25 mph, ASR controls throttle response to maximize traction and minimize slipping for enhanced driver control in tight cornering situations. Pressing a button in the center of the dash turns ASR off.
